MVC Opticians Serve Seniors
by Gigi Hampton
With the hustle and bustle of our busy weekday schedules, weekend free time is precious. Weekends are full of running errands, taking children to extra-curricular activities, and catching up on house work. However, sometimes we are invited to break our hectic routine and embrace helping others in a rewarding way.
On Saturday, October 18, 2014 employees from McCabe Vision Center (MVC) took the initiative to participate in the Northside Healthcare’s 2nd Annual Senior Citizen Fall Festival. They adjusted, cleaned and fixed resident’s, staff and guest’s glasses. Donating their time was Cataract Surgery Coordinator, Leslie Moffler, Opticians, Tracy Knalls and Shannon Jones and Marketing Director and Patient Liaison, Gigi Hampton.
Shannon was seen walking around the festival scouting out anyone with glasses. At times, she would return to the booth with two or three pairs of glasses for her and Tracy to replace screws, adjust and clean.Shannon even made her way inside the building where she visited resident’s rooms to ask if they had any glasses that needed attention. According to the Opticians, “those glasses really needed some TLC.” Despite the cold winds, the team managed to keep warm by the expressions of gratitude such as, “I can see!” and “wow, it’s like a brand new pair of glasses!”
Besides repairing glasses, complimentary lens cleaner, cleaning clothes, educational materials, pens and tasty chocolate eyeball treats were available for grabs at the booth as well.“It was nice to have the opportunity to go out and visit some of our established patients and meet their families. We also had a young boy visit the booth just to let us know that he got his glasses from our office and that he loves them. That was pretty awesome” said Tracy.
The errands, yard and house work may not be completed in the routine manner we are accustomed too, but don’t worry, they will still be there when you get home. Taking an opportunity to put the needs of others before your own provides a uniquely deep sense of accomplishment. McCabe Vision Center is looking forward to participating in more community functions like this and truly appreciates NHC inviting them to be a part of their Fall Festival this year.
